Join the IOP as we welcome General James N. Mattis, former Secretary of Defense and four-star general with 44 years of service in the Marine Corps, for a conversation with IOP Director David Axelrod. Together, they will discuss Mattis’s decorated military career, his two years of service in President’s Trump’s cabinet, the intersection of politics and military leadership, and US military engagement around the world.

General Mattis served as the 26th Secretary of Defense until his resignation in December 2018. He previously commanded U.S. Joint Forces Command, NATO’s Supreme Allied Command for Transformation, and U.S. Central Command as joint force commander. He also led an infantry battalion in Iraq in 1991 and a brigade in Afghanistan after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. During his non-combat assignments, General Mattis served as Senior Military Assistant to the Deputy Secretary of Defense; Director of Marine Corps Manpower Plans & Policy; Commanding General of Marine Corps Combat Development Command; and Executive Secretary to the Secretary of Defense. Mattis’ memoir, Call Sign Chaos: Learning to Lead, reached #1 on the New York Times Bestseller list.
