IOP Pritzker Fellow Alex Wagner on "Firing Generals & Invading Cities: When Politics Breaks Military Norms"

THIS SEMINAR IS OPEN TO CURRENT UCHICAGO STUDENTS ONLY

Thursday, October 23

11:30am - 12:45pm

The Pentagon of Donald Trump’s second term is unlike any in modern history. He’s fired top generals and admirals, sent the National Guard into American cities, and hinted that he might invoke the Insurrection Act to deploy active duty troops at home. And his Defense Secretary? A former Fox News host with little relevant experience who openly brags about using the U.S. Navy to "smoke" suspected drug cartel boats off Venezuela’s coast and pressured the Pentagon Press Corps to sign up to government imposed rules in exchange for access.  What happens when the Commander-in-Chief politicizes the military in ways that would have been unthinkable just a few years ago? We'll explore these unprecedented tensions and what they mean for American democracy and the troops who swear an oath to defend it.

Pritzker Fellows seminars are off the record and open to current UChicago students only. Seating in the IOP Living Room is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.
