Pritzker Fellow Yulín Cruz on "Puerto Rico: Civil Rights or Human Rights Conundrum"

(Current UChicago Students Only)

Thursday, February 3

3:30-4:45 PM

Ever since the last century, Puerto Ricans have been divided as to whether or not they want Puerto Rico to become the 51st state. Since the debacle of Hurricanes Irma and Maria, many think that the civil rights of the Puerto Rican people have been trampled upon. But is this an issue of civil rights violations (citizens of a country being systematically excluded from freely exercising their rights), or is this an issue of human rights (citizens of a country colonized by another country systematically unable to exercise their human rights)?

This convening is open to current UChicago students who are compliant with UChicago vaccination requirements and, because of ongoing health risks, particularly to the unvaccinated, participants are expected to adopt the risk mitigation measures (masking and social distancing, etc.) appropriate to their vaccination status as advised by public health officials or to their individual vulnerabilities as advised by a medical professional. Public convening may not be safe for all and carries a risk for contracting COVID-19, particularly for those unvaccinated. Participants will not know the vaccination status of others and should follow appropriate risk mitigation measures.
